Social Security Number
A Social Security Number (SSN) is a unique nine-digit number assigned to U.S. citizens and certain non-citizens. The Social Security Administration (SSA) issues SSNs to eligible individuals.
Expat Overseas can help you understand when a SSN is needed and how to get one.
When Do I Need a Social Security Number?
A SSN is required for a variety of reasons, including
- Opening a bank account
- Applying for a loan
- Apply for a job
- Receiving Social Security benefits
- Filing taxes,
- Applying for benefits such as Medicare and Medicaid.
If you are a non-U.S. citizen, you may not be eligible for an SSN. However, you may be able to get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
