IRS Streamlined Procedure

The IRS Streamlined Procedure is a program that allows certain U.S. taxpayers who have failed to report all of their income and pay the appropriate tax to comply with the IRS without facing penalties. This program is intended to assist taxpayers in catching up on their taxes and avoiding harsh penalties by allowing them to file amended tax returns and pay any taxes owed. To be eligible for the program, taxpayers must meet certain criteria, such as being a U.S. citizen or resident alien, failing to report all of their income and pay the appropriate tax due to non-willful conduct, and not being the subject of an IRS criminal investigation.

Criteria Streamlined Procedure

Eligibility criteria for the streamlined procedures:

  • Taxpayers must certify that conduct was not willful.
  • IRS has not initiated a civil examination of taxpayer’s returns for any taxable year.
  • Taxpayers who want to participate in the streamlined procedures need a valid Taxpayer Identification Number.
  • The individual was physically outside the United States for at least 330 full days.

Benefit of Streamlined Procedure

But that doesn’t mean you won’t be fined if you file incorrectly; our advice in this is leave it to a professional who has a lot of experience filing returns for Americans living abroad.
