Financial planning for expats
Investing can be difficult
For Americans living abroad, investing, particularly in funds, can be difficult. This is due to the fact that funds investments may contain a PFIC (Passive Foreign Investment Company). Or there are so many rules and opportunities in the US and locally around retirement investments, investments, and real estate investments that you simply have to be a pro to make the right choices.
Helping you to invest
To keep it short and simple, please avoid PFICs! Highly skilled financial planners can help you invest in PFIC free funds or other investments. Expats Overseas is happy to refer you for free.
Complicated tax guidelines
Sections 1291 through 1298 of the United States income tax code outline the Internal Revenue Service’s strict and extremely complicated tax guidelines for PFIC investments. The PFIC, as well as its shareholders, must keep accurate records of all transactions involving the PFIC, such as share cost basis, dividends received, and any undistributed income that the PFIC may earn.
Licensed financial planners
Expats Overseas works with a large network of licensed financial planners who specialize in investments for US citizens. Where a traditional bank or investment firm cannot adequately serve these people, this group of professionals can.
You will also receive a Form 1099 each year, which you will need for your US tax return. For some, the minimum annual investment is 1000 euros.
